Crimson Moon Walkthrough: Beginner to Endgame Guide
Complete Crimson Moon campaign walkthrough. Sanctus Clypeus hub prep, 3-mission Gildenarch Ward loop, Nexus Gate Boons, Purify mechanics, and World Bosses.
Every Crimson Moon hunt starts at Sanctus Clypeus: three Ward missions, then an ancient Dead God World Boss. Survive via your shared life pool, draft temporary Boons at Nexus Gates, and purify gear for permanent progression.
The Core Expedition Loop: From Sanctus Clypeus to the Dead Gods
In Crimson Moon, you play as a Nephilim—a human-angel hybrid fighting alongside the Knights of the Crimson Moon and the Lunitarian Church to reclaim the fallen Gothic city of Gildenarch from the spreading Hellgrowth and the Infernal Legion. Unlike linear single-pass campaigns, Crimson Moon is structured around high-stakes, replayable three-mission hunts culminating in a World Boss:

Phase 1: Pre-Hunt Preparation Inside Sanctus Clypeus
Every hunt begins and ends inside Sanctus Clypeus, known in lore as the Divine Shield and formerly Crimson Hall, where the Knights of the Crimson Moon and the Lunitarian Church maintain an uneasy alliance. Before interacting with the War Table, complete this four-part preparation sequence:
1. Visit the Four Sanctus Clypeus Allies
As your campaign progresses, four core allies inside the stronghold provide permanent progression services:
| Sanctus Clypeus Ally | Role & Background | Pre-Hunt & Post-Hunt Service |
|---|---|---|
| Gallant | Founder of the Knights of the Crimson Moon and legendary Nephilim mentor | Guides your campaign, assigns bounty quests, and oversees mission readiness near the War Table. |
| Mereda | Resident historian of the Order obsessed with the forgotten history of Eden | Accepts Lore Scrolls recovered in Gildenarch to permanently unlock new Boons, and grants Blessings in exchange for Souls. |
| Lotte | Thrill-seeking treasure hunter scarred by his search for forbidden relics | Supplies the Knights before every hunt; visit him to stock up on trinkets, throwables, and consumables. |
| Gajov | Fearsome vampire blacksmith of legendary craftsmanship | Increases the permanent minimum rarity quality of your purified equipment, or sells new gear in exchange for Souls. |
2. Configure All 9 Gear Slots at the Loadout Station
Interact with the Loadout Station to equip your Nephilim across all nine slots. For a complete archetype breakdown of how these slots fit together, see our 9-gear-slot builds guide:
- Four Armor Pieces: Combine pieces belonging to matching armor sets to specialize in either aggressive melee pressure or heavy damage mitigation.
- Two Trinkets: Slot offensive or defensive relics acquired from Ward runs or purchased from Lotte.
- Primary Weapon + Shield: Equip a one-handed sword, axe, or hammer alongside an off-hand shield. Both your 1H weapon and your shield provide active Weapon Arts on separate cooldowns (for example, pairing Axe of the Gods for Empower with Sovereign’s Shield for Angelic Bulwark).
- Secondary Two-Handed Polearm: Always assign a heavy polearm (such as Crescent Moon Halberd, Leviathan Great Axe, or Reaper Poleaxe) to your secondary weapon slot so you have a third active Weapon Art and wide sweeping cleaves ready.
- Select Your Angel: Choose an Angel companion to accompany you into Gildenarch before stepping away from the Loadout Station.
Critical Mid-Run Lockout Rule: Developer Team Metal confirmed that if you return to Sanctus Clypeus between your three missions and see the Loadout Station unavailable or floating above you, this is not a bug—you are still in an active run! You cannot swap weapons or armor until you either complete the World Boss or exhaust your life pool.
Phase 2: Mastering Gildenarch Wards & Enemy Factions
Once you select a destination at the War Table, you deploy into one of Gildenarch’s Wards. Each Ward consists of three replayable missions packed with faction enemies, elite encounters, secrets, Lore Scrolls, and a District Vessel boss.
How to Counter All 7 Gildenarch Enemy Types
Recognizing each enemy faction’s behavior preserves your healing flasks and expedition life pool for the bosses ahead:
| Enemy Type | Faction Category | Combat Behavior | Recommended Counter-Tactic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Undead | Undead | Reanimated flesh-and-bone skeletons created by the Hellgrowth as its first line of defense; weak individually but attack in dense swarms. | Cleave with two-handed polearm arts like Whirlwind (Drakeward), Reaper Whirlwind (Leviathan Great Axe), or Fire Burst (Fiery Broadsword). |
| Vampires | Vampire | Ascended descendants of Dark Lord Cain’s cult from rival clans across Eden; disciplined, fast melee duelists. | Block or parry their combo strings with a shield, then punish with Rupturing Slash (Wyrmtongue / Cultravix) or Gouging Throw (Scirax). |
| Feral Vampires | Vampire | Newly turned vampires who fed upon the Hellgrowth, trapping them in a violent, mutated state with relentless gap-closing leaps. | Slow their rushes using Ice Trail (Lunar Sentinel Shield) or freeze them outright with Winter Sun (Revenant Blade / Sword of the Lunar Sentinel). |
| Reborn Cultists | Human | Ritual fanatics who consumed infernal flora; mutations make them strong, immune to pain, and telepathically coordinated. | Do not rely on light-attack hitstun; use Crushing skills like Shield Bash or Earthen Strike (Soldier’s Hammer / Champion’s Sword) to knock them down. |
| Imp | Demon | Winged airborne demons that hover above melee reach, casting ranged spells and ambushing in packs. | Lock on (R3 / Middle Click) and eliminate them first with Homing Projectiles (Reaper Poleaxe), Bleed Projectiles (Morning Star), or Fireball (Mahkten Shield). |
| Death Knight | Demon | Intelligent, agile, and heavily armored foot soldiers of Cain’s Infernal Legion with high endurance. | Bait their heavy swings, use Empower (Axe of the Gods / Covenant Cleric Shield) to trade safely, and pierce their guard with Impaling Throw. |
| Demon Brute | Demon | Massive siege demons bred to smash kingdom walls; slow telegraphs but devastating area slams. | Dodge through their overhead swings toward their back, stack statuses, and detonate with Purifying Blast (Sovereign’s Sword). |
Phase 3: Life Pool Survival & Nexus Gate Boon Drafting
Managing the Expedition Life Pool
Every run in Crimson Moon is sustained by a shared life pool rather than infinite checkpoint retries:
- Recovering from Death: When you fall in battle, your life pool gives you an opportunity to recover and continue pushing deeper into the Ward.
- Total Exhaustion: Once your life pool is completely exhausted, the run ends immediately. You cannot return to your corpse to recover unpurified loot or resume from where you left off—only permanent progression (purified gear, Gajov upgrades, and Mereda scroll unlocks) carries forward.
- Flask & Cooldown Discipline: Because every death taxes your life pool for the upcoming World Boss, prioritize Nexus Gate Boons that restore health or regenerate flasks during early missions rather than hoarding all choices for glass-cannon damage.
Drafting Synergistic Boons at Nexus Gates
As you clear Ward encounters, you pass through Nexus Gates, where you choose between temporary Boons that remain active for the rest of your run:
- Reinforce Your Core Archetype: Match your Boon choices to your equipped Weapon Arts—combining aggressive melee gear with Boons that restore health during battle or reward aggressive play.
- Patch Defensive Gaps Before Mission 3: If your build lacks defensive Weapon Arts like Angelic Bulwark, prioritize Boons that debuff enemies or regenerate flasks before facing a District Vessel.
- Co-Op Synergy: In two-player online co-op, coordinate at Nexus Gates so one partner drafts frontline survivability and crowd debuffs while the other stacks raw damage multipliers.
Phase 4: Conquering District Vessels & Ancient Dead Gods
Across your three Ward missions and final World Boss chamber, you will face two tiers of bosses—each rewarding signature armaments that can be added to your arsenal. Full tactical counter-strategies for every Vessel and Dead God are documented in our boss fight guide:
- Six District Vessels:
- The Warden (Forsaken Streets Hellgrowth composite) $\to$ Unlocks Blasphemous Accord (1H Sword, Poison Caltrops).
- Cardinal Mathias (Corrupted Archspire Chapter leader) $\to$ Unlocks Defiled Night (Polearm, Cardinal’s Staff).
- Tyrigon, Spawn of the Black Aeon (Dragon mount of Valahk-Nor) $\to$ Unlocks Dragon Assassin Broadsword (1H Sword, Fire Burst).
- General Valahk-Nor (Infernal Legion commander) $\to$ Unlocks Gildenarch’s Glory (1H Sword, Valak Slam).
- The Flesh-Wrought Egregore (Mature Hellgrowth hive horror) $\to$ Unlocks Akyreon’s Tongue (Polearm, Egregore Explosion).
- Felwyl the Withered / Ascended (Solomon’s immortal lich accomplice) $\to$ Unlocks Scirax (1H Sword, Gouging Throw) and Cultravix (Polearm, Rupturing Slash).
- Three Ancient Dead Gods (World Bosses bound to Abraxas Stones):
- E’frae, The Dry Rot King $\to$ Unlocks Rotkin’s Thorn (1H Sword, Sword of Rot).
- Mahkteah, The Lord of Perdition $\to$ Unlocks Burning Heart (1H Sword, Aura of the Burning Heart).
- Aegoroth, The Eye of the Abyss $\to$ Patron of the blind Seekers associated with Obsidian Shard (Bleed Projectiles).
Phase 5: Post-Run Progression — Purification & Gajov’s Forge
When a hunt concludes and you return to Sanctus Clypeus, convert your run rewards into permanent power:
- Purify Discovered Gear: Purifying an item permanently unlocks it in your Loadout Station collection. Keep in mind Team Metal’s core rule: purifying an item permanently unlocks that item at Common quality, regardless of the quality you found it at (so a purified Rare drop begins at Common in your permanent collection).
- Raise Minimum Quality Everywhere with Gajov: Bring your purified Common weapons and armor to Gajov the vampire blacksmith. Upgrading an item with Gajov permanently increases its minimum quality everywhere—ensuring that weapon only spawns at Uncommon, Rare, or higher quality in all future runs, both at the Loadout Station and in random Gildenarch loot drops.
- Turn in Lore Scrolls to Mereda: Hand over every recovered Lore Scroll to Mereda to permanently expand the pool of Boons that can appear at future Nexus Gates.
- Numerical values and patch scalings reflect live retail release version 1.0.0 for Crimson Moon.

Verified Strategy FAQ
4 Entries1 How does a full expedition run work in Crimson Moon? ↓
Every hunt begins at Sanctus Clypeus, where you equip nine gear slots, choose an Angel companion, and select a Ward at the War Table. A full run consists of three replayable missions followed by a climactic World Boss encounter against one of the three ancient Dead Gods.
2 Why can't I access the Loadout Station when returning to Sanctus Clypeus between missions? ↓
Developer Team Metal confirmed that returning to Sanctus Clypeus between your three missions does not end your active run. Because you are still mid-run, the Loadout Station stays locked above you until you defeat the World Boss or exhaust your life pool.
3 How do Purification and Gajov upgrades carry forward between runs? ↓
Purifying discovered equipment permanently adds it to your collection at Common quality, regardless of the rarity tier found during the hunt. Upgrading that item with Gajov the vampire blacksmith permanently raises its minimum spawn quality everywhere in future runs.
4 What happens when your life pool runs out during a hunt? ↓
Each run is supported by a finite life pool that allows you to recover from death and keep pushing deeper into the Ward. Once the life pool is exhausted, the run ends immediately—you cannot return to recover unpurified loot or resume from that checkpoint.
